Since the early 1980’s, local farmers and craftsmen have been assembling in Downtown Chestertown’s Fountain Park on Saturday mornings to offer goods to locals and visitors alike. Originally, the gathering was a farmers’ market only, but in later years the event has evolved to include local artisans and vintners, making up the Chestertown Farmers’ & Artisans’ Market of today!
Of course, we say “originally” lightly, because the market has been going on for much, much longer than the modern iteration has lasted. While it was known that farmers and fishermen would gather in the 1940s and 1950s (only to reach a lull between the 1960s and 1980s), it was discovered that the market is, in fact, an idea that is over 250 years old!
Yes, in 1762, the Maryland General Assembly decreed an Act to create a community market on the very land that hosts it today. Talk about a long-standing tradition! So it is with great pride and a sense of tradition that we invite all who visit to the “modern” Chestertown Farmers’ & Artisans’ Market on Saturday mornings, from now through December 19, 2015.
When you arrive, you’ll find locally grown, seasonal produce, herbs and flowers. Enjoy baked items (for both you and your canine friends) from some of our area’s favorite kitchens, vintages from area wineries, locally made cheese and fresh eggs. Area artisans offer pottery, textiles, soaps, jewelry, wood carvings, gourd crafts, glassware, candles, clothing, hats, purses and creative home decor.
You may even hear local musicians serenade you as you shop if you happen to visit on Saturday, June 6, 2015 when members the National Music Festival offer audio entertainment.
As the original Maryland General Assembly Act dictated, today’s Farmers’ and Artisans’ Market (or just “The Famers’ Market” to the locals) runs “from any Time in the Morning (in this case 8:00 a.m.) to Twelve at Noon.” While the Act dictated that the Market would run on both Wednesdays and Saturdays, our modern Market is currently offered on Saturday mornings only. Fountain Park is located at the corner of High Street and North Cross Street – that’s just a short 9.3 mile drive from Great Oak Manor.
Consider a visit to Chestertown’s long-standing market, voted “Best in Maryland” twice by area residents, and take home some of the flavors and unique goods that can only be found here in Maryland!
