Chestertown Tea Party Festival 2018

Chestertown Tea Party Festival

In the spring of 1774, when news of the port of Boston’s closing reached Chestertown, the citizens met to determine what actions should be taken in response. They forth a list of grievances, which became known as the Chestertown Resolves, which made it unlawful to buy, sell or drink tea that came from England. According to local legend, following the publication of the Resolves in the Maryland Gazzette, residents gathered in the town center before marching to the brigantine, Geddes, and dumped all the tea overboard.

Every year, the town of Chestertown hosts a tea party along the Chester River and historical district commemorating the event. At the center of the festival is the annual re-enactment, which is scheduled for 2 p.m. on Saturday, May 26.

The festival, which is scheduled for May 25-27, 2018, has plenty of fun to offer Kent county residents and visitors.

On Saturday, start the festival off on a fast note and take part in the 2018 Classic Distance 10 Mile Run and 5k Run/Walk. Enjoy the Colonial Parade on High Street, which features colonial militia, marching bands, floats, costume-garbed children, and more! Cap off the day with a guided walking tour of the historic district. The tour is conducted by trained docents who are residents of Kent County.

On Sunday, head to Wilmer Park from noon to 4 p.m. for the Wine and Craft Beer Tasting, which will feature local wineries and craft breweries. Don’t forget to stay for the raft race at 2:30 p.m. The Raft Race is an unusual race on the Chester River, in which all the rafts are made from non-nautical materials. Come watch the amazing engineering feats and take a guess at which raft will sail to the end and which will meet an untimely fate at the bottom of the Chester River.

Throughout the weekend, you can visit with vendors, who will sell and demonstrate colonial crafts, eat delicious food, and dance down High Street to the sounds of strolling street musicians.
